Benefits

Well, after deciding I was going to get back into it on Wednesday, Thursday came and the predicted ice rain cancelled all basketball giving me no excuse.  Weather was tolerable enough that a mile run outside with my dog that I couldnt resist.  Friday's schedule was impossible but to make up for it, I worked out twice on Saturday, another nice weather day that I was able to get outside at least once.  Today, Sunday, is my easiest day to exerice, two field hockey games tonight which is the best way to exercise!

I've found that during this season, I am going to focus more on just trying to run a mile rather than a long distance run, because that takes up more time that I might not be able to find.  It's important to continuously remind myself of the health benefits of exercise.  4 years of college and my current profession, I know these things without a second guess, but sometimes it's important to remind ourselves.  Aside from losing weight, exercise has such a positive impact on our lives...
  • Exercise improves mood- brain chemicals are altered to increase happiness and relaxation but also can improve confidence and self-esteem.
  • Exericse boosts energy
  • Exercise decreases chance of health problems and diseases
  • Exercise promotes better sleep

Self Motivation

Well, for my first blog ever, I figured there is no better topic than the word that seems to be surrounding my life these days.  Whether it be motivating myself, my athletes or my students, I feel as though I am almost overusing this word daily.  Unfortunatly, in the busy winter season, I seem to be lacking motivation for myself.

I've never really faced this lack of self motivation before, growing up an athlete I was always running around or being forced to run for the drive to be successful in my sport.  Now that I have moved from not only player to coach but also player to fan, as I have a younger brother starting his high school basketball career, I can't find the time or energy to exercise during this basketball season.  It has never been a matter of only exercising when told, I enjoy going for runs on my own and in college my roommates said I went to the gym too much.  The question is, how do I get myself going again?

For the next two weeks, I am going to stop with the excuses and stop defending my excuses.  I am tired and busy, but everyone is.  I need to stop making excuses and get myself back to the one thing that destresses me.  This my pledge and I will blog about my self motivation technique and how to truly fit exercise into a busy 10- 14 hour work day.
